On Sunday, October 20 2019, Saint George's Cathedral in Saint-Hubert dressed in festive clothes. The community has celebrated 15 years since its inception.
On this occasion, with the blessing of His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated by the priests serving in the Cathedral – Rev. Fr. Daniel Sandu and Rev. Fr. Traian Petre. At the end of the Divine Liturgy those present received the blessing and participated at the fraternal agape-meal specially prepared for this purpose.
The short history of the Cathedral
St. Gheorghe’s Parish was founded in 2004, with the blessing of H.Em. Nicolae, the Romanian Orthodox Archbishop of America and Canada, following the initiative of a group of Romanians from South-Shore, having as promoters the members of the Geagiu family. The first Divine Liturgy was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Felician Zinca on October 10, 2004 in Saint Antoine Roman Catholic Church in Brossard. Since July 2005, Rev. Fr. Daniel Paul Sandu has been appointed as priest of the parish. Since August 2007, the services have been held temporarily at Notre Dame de l'Assomption Catholic Parish. The current Church, located at 2000 blvd. Marie, Saint-Hubert (Quebec), was purchased on July 17, 2008. The inauguration of it took place on August 3, and the consecration of the first iconostasis was performed on October 12 by H.Em. Metropolitan Nicolae and H.G. Bishop Ioan Casian surrounded by several priests and deacons. From October 2009 the parish has as protopsalt Mr. Valentin Botu.
On September 29 2013, the Church was consecrated in the presence of H.Em. Metropolitan Nicolae and H.G. Bishop Ioan Casian, along with a large number of priests and deacons. Also here on May 7, 2017, the ceremony of the enthronement of H.G. Ioan Casian as the first Romanian Orthodox bishop of Canada took place.
