Starting February 2018, at the Cathedral St. George’s of Saint-Hubert, Montréal, Mr. Cezar Vitencu, helped by Mr. Ciprian Toader and Mrs. Anca Coza, organizes every two-week a free chess course for beginners as well as for advanced learners. There are already between 10 and 15 children participating, their number growing by the discovery in the church of this sport of mind.
The activity takes place on Friday evening or Saturday, and takes 1h30 min. in general, but often time is expanded at the request of the children.
The course is always begun with prayer and as a result the children are very receptive, quiet and focused throughout the course. So chess is not only for the mind but also for the soul. Through the quiet atmosphere in which it unfolds, creates a framework for concentration, listening, discernment, perspicacity, and mind opening to predict the dangers or strategies of the partner.
The children find their partners progressively playing the game together, but the most advanced by rotation help the beginners by playing chess, thus practicing a real brotherly love.
The course proposes a theme, e.g.: "The development of the chess pieces and the occupation of the central fields". It starts with the theoretical presentation, some children already knowing it, followed by watching a video with the application of the theme by famous Romanian chess players. Once theoretically mastered, the new strategy is applied in friendly matches between children.
Regular children also have the opportunity to participate in chess tournaments in the Montréal area, Club Optimiste and Echec et Math Association. A large number of medals were won by the children’s participation in the local, regional and provincial stages as a fruit of the effort made by children, parents and teacher. Thanks are addressed to all.
