The Patronal Feast of the Episcopal Cathedral in Canada
The Witness of Faith in the Light of the Testimony of Saint Great Martyr George

On the feast day of Saint George the Great Martyr, the Episcopal Cathedral in Saint-Hubert, Québec, Canada—dedicated to Saint George the Great Martyr and to Saints Epictetus and Astion—put on festive garments, gathering clergy and faithful alike in prayer.

The celebration of the patronal feast began on Wednesday afternoon with the service of Vespers, officiated by His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian, Romanian Orthodox Bishop of Canada, together with Protosyncellus Maxim Morariu and Fr. Traian Constantin Petre, thus spiritually preparing the liturgical joy of the following day.

On the day of the feast, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated by His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian, together with Fr. Mircea Panciuk, Protosyncellus Maxim Morariu, Fr. Constantin Ciubotariu, Fr. Olimpiu Mărginean, Fr. Daniel Ungureanu, Fr. Marius Constantin Popa, and Deacon Valentin Boțu, in an atmosphere of profound liturgical solemnity.

At the end of the Divine Liturgy, in his homily, the hierarch spoke about the model of confession (witness) offered by Saint George the Great Martyr.

Referring to the meaning of the Paschal period, he emphasized that it “signifies the time in which the Holy Apostles saw the Risen Christ, strengthening their faith in His Resurrection and in the truth He proclaimed.”

A first essential point of the sermon was the awareness that the Christian life also involves trials. Quoting the words of the Savior “If the world hates you, know that it has hated Me before it hated you,” the bishop reminded that opposition from the world should not surprise us, but rather strengthen us in patience and faith.

He then highlighted the authentic character of Christian witness, underlining that it is not an imaginary construct but a historical reality: “The testimony of the Church is not based on a story, but on a concrete, historical recognition of the presence, life, and work of Jesus Christ among us.” Referring to the Apostles’ testimony, he noted that they spoke of “the One Whom they had seen and heard,” thus grounding faith in the direct experience of encountering Christ.

Another central theme of the homily was the Trinitarian dimension of the Church’s life.  The hierarch said: “Nothing in the Church is done without the work of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,” stressing that the entire sanctifying life of the Church is an expression of this shared divine work.

In the second part of his sermon, the Romanian bishop spoke about the relevance of Saint George’s example today. Though young and with a promising career ahead of him, Saint George chose to confess his faith over worldly advantages, becoming a model for Christians today. “He is an example of choosing between career and faith,” the bishop emphasized.

Bringing the martyr’s message into the present, the hierarch drew attention to contemporary forms of pressure: “Even today there are forms of persecution—not always violent, but sometimes ideological—which constrain the freedom of conscience,” calling for steadfastness and discernment.

A special emphasis was placed on the foundation of this witness—the faith in eternal life. “Witness cannot exist without the hope of eternal life,” the bishop stated, showing that only this hope gives meaning to sacrifice and martyrial courage.

In conclusion, His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian encouraged those present to keep alive the Paschal joy and to follow the example of Saint George. He also extended congratulations to all those bearing the saint’s name, calling him “a great protector and a powerful intercessor before God.”

Thus, the patronal feast unfolded under the sign of communion and strengthening in faith, reaffirming the calling of every Christian to bear witness—with love and courage—to the truth of the Risen Christ.
