Fr. Vasile Ioana, on the Sunday of the Holy Apostle Thomas, with Romanians in Montreal

On April 19, 2026, with the blessing of His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian, Fr. Vasile Ioana served on the Second Sunday after Pascha—the Sunday of the Holy Apostle Thomas—at the Cathedral of “Saint Great Martyr George” and “Saints Epictetus and Astion” in Montreal / Saint-Hubert, together with the clergy of the Episcopal Cathedral: Fr. Mircea Panciuk (archpriest emeritus), Protosyncellus Dr. Maxim Morariu (ecclesiarch), Fr. Adrian Manea, Fr. Marius Constantin Popa, and Deacon Valentin Boțu.

In his homily, Fr. Vasile delivered a profound message centered on the mystery of faith and the personal encounter with the Risen Christ. Drawing from the Gospel of the day, he emphasized that Christ’s entry through the closed doors is not merely a historical event, but carries deep spiritual meaning: Christ continues to enter today through the “closed doors” of the human heart, overcoming fear, doubt, and inner isolation in order to grant His peace—a peace that is His very living presence in the life of the believer.

Referring to the person of the Holy Apostle Thomas, the priest explained that his doubt is not rejected by Christ, but transformed into confession. Thomas’s desire to see and touch becomes, in the end, an occasion for strengthening faith, culminating in one of the most powerful confessions in the Gospel: “My Lord and my God.” In this context, faith is presented not as a simple intellectual assent, but as a living, personal relationship between the human being and God.

Another aspect highlighted was human freedom in relation to God. Christ does not force His way into a person’s life, but “stands at the door and knocks,” awaiting each individual’s free response. Thus, Christian life involves a conscious and constant openness to God, expressed through prayer, participation in the Holy Mysteries (Sacraments), and the practice of love toward one’s neighbor.

Fr. Vasile also underlined that there is no real opposition between faith and science; rather, they are complementary ways of knowing. God encourages sincere seeking and inquiry, but fulfills this search in living faith, which brings peace and meaning to human life.

In conclusion, the faithful were encouraged to place their relationship with God first and to cultivate an authentic spiritual life in which prayer, humility, and love become the foundation of existence. The central message of the sermon was that a person’s true “home” is wherever God is—within the heart—and that peace and joy flow from this living communion with the Risen Christ.

At the end, Fr. Maxim, the cathedral’s ecclesiarch, on behalf of His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian, thanked the guest for his teaching and offered him a bouquet of flowers. In turn, Fr. Vasile Ioana presented the hierarch with an icon of Saint Maria Brâncoveanu and then blessed those present with holy oil from the Holy Sepulchre.
