Commemoration of the Holy 40 Martyrs of Sevastia and Memorial Day of Anti-Communist Political Prisoners (1944-1989)
The commemoration of the Holy Forty Martyrs of Sebaste is celebrated on March 9 (in the Orthodox calendar). These martyrs suffered martyrdom during the persecutions against Christians in the time of the Roman Emperor Licinius, in the 4th century. Their martyrdom shows the courage and the unwavering faith in the face of suffering and death.
Also on this day, we commemorate the anti-communist political prisoners. In this way, we pay special tribute to those who fought against the communist regime and who suffered in prisons for their faith and nation. This moment is an opportunity to meditate on the sacrifices they made for freedom, justice, and dignity.
I also invite you at this time to commemorate and remember them on Sunday of Orthodoxy in order to keep their memory alive as important figures in the history of faith and the fight for freedom.
